Scientists at the Rocket launching station in Thumba, were in the habit of working for nearly 12 to 18 hours a day. There were about Seventy such scientists working on a project. All the scientists were really frustrated due to the pressure of work and the demands of their boss but everyone was loyal to him and did not think of quitting the job.

One day, one scientist came to his boss and told him - Sir, I have promised to my children that I will take them to the exhibition going on in our township. So I want to leave the office at 5 30 pm. His boss replied - O K, , You are permitted to leave the office early today.

The Scientist started working. He continued his work after lunch. As usual he got involved to such an extent that he looked at his watch when he felt he was close to completion. The time was 8.30 p.m Suddenly he remembered of the promise he had given to his children. He looked for his boss,, He was not there. Having told him in the morning itself, he closed everything and left for home. Deep within himself, he was feeling guilty for having disappointed his children.

He reached home. Children were not there. His wife alone was sitting in the hall and reading magazines. The situation was explosive, any talk would boomerang on him.

His wife asked him - Would you like to have coffee or shall I straight away serve dinner if you are hungry. The man replied - If you would like to have coffee, I too will have but what about Children??? Wife replied- You don’t know - Your manager came at 5 15 p.m and has taken the children to the exhibition.

What had really happened was the boss who granted him permission was observing him working seriously at 5.00 p.m. He thought to himself, this person will not leave the work, but if he has promised his children they should enjoy the visit to exhibition. So he took the lead in taking them to exhibition.

The boss does not have to do it every time. But once it is done, loyalty
is established.

That is why all the scientists at Thumba continued to work under their boss even though the stress was tremendous.

My birth date you have on my social insurance card, and it is on all the income tax forms I've filed for the past 30 years. It is on my health insurance card, my driver's license, on the last eight goddamn passports I've had, on all those stupid customs declaration forms I've had to fill out before being allowed off the planes over the last 30 years, and all those insufferable census forms that are done at election times.

Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother's name is Maryanne, my father's name is Robert and I'd be absolutely astounded if that ever changed between now and when I die!

Kevin Carter: photographer commits suicide

The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it. This picture shocked the whole world. No one know what happened to the child, including the photographer Kevin Carter who left the place as soon as the photograph was taken.

Born in 1960, Kevin Carter was an award winning South African photojournalist. He began his career photographing scenes of the violent struggle against Apartheid in South Africa. However, it was a 1993 picture of a famine victim in Sudan that would change his life forever.

"He heard a soft, high-pitched whimpering and saw a tiny girl trying to make her way to the feeding center. As he crouched to photograph her, a vulture landed in view. Careful not to disturb the bird, he positioned himself for the best possible image. He would later say he waited about 20 minutes, hoping the vulture would spread its wings. It did not, and after he took his photographs, he chased the bird away and watched as the little girl resumed her struggle."

This picture earned Carter the 1994 Pullitzer Prize for feature photography. "I swear I got the most applause of anybody," Carter wrote back to his parents in Johannesburg. "I can't wait to show you the trophy. It is the most precious thing, and the highest acknowledgment of my work I could receive." Carter's joy would not last.

Friends and colleagues would come to question why he had not done more to help the child in the photograph? "The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering," said the St. Petersburg (Florida) Times, "might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene."

Burdened with feelings of guilt and sadness, Kevin Carter took his own life On July 27, 1994. His suicide note stated in part, "...I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain . . . of starving or wounded children..."

he committed suicide by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning on July 27, 1994, at the age of 33.

Wow, of all the times to get shot. An off duty FBI agent was shot after leaving a bar in a government issued Hummer that the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper is asking whether or not he should have taken home. Did Mueller shoot him (just kidding).

But this really did happen and the most amazing part of the story is after being shot in the chest the agent, Brian Vigneaux, “Drove his friend home before driving himself to Lakewood Hospital.”

Boy in the bubble bath: Tom Woods, 12, emerges from the clouds of foam after deciding that surfing was not an option
It stretched for 30 miles out into the Pacific in a phenomenon not seen at the beach for more than three decades. Scientists explain that the foam is created by impurities in the ocean, such as salts, chemicals, dead plants, decomposed fish and excretions from seaweed. All are churned up together by powerful currents which cause the water to form bubbles. These bubbles stick to each other as they are carried below the surface by the current towards the shore. As a wave starts to form on the surface, the motion of the water causes the bubbles to swirl upwards and, massed together, they become foam.

The foam 'surfs' towards shore until the wave 'crashes', tossing the foam into the air.

'It's t he same effect you get when you whip up a milk shake in a blender,' explains a marine expert. 'The more powerful the swirl, the more foam you create on the surface and the lighter it becomes.' In this case, storms off the New South Wales Coast and further north off Queensland had created a huge disturbance in the ocean, hitting a stretch of water where there was a particularly high amount of the substances which form into bubbles. As for 12-year-old beachgoer Tom Woods, who has been surfing since he was two, riding a wave was out of the question. 'Me and my mates just spent the afternoon leaping about in that stuff,' he said.

'It was quite cool to touch and it was really weird. It was like clouds of air - you could hardly feel it.'

Family moves to Florida

Ken and Carol moved to Florida 2 years ago from Maine and now, as is always the case, relatives follow; case in point their son and his family.

The young man immediately got a job working outdoors with a firm laying underground pipe for the county. Now, this is a tough job for anyone let alone a man from up nor'east, not use to Florida flora and fauna: 100 degree temps, higher humidity than is humanely possible, up to your nethers every day in muddy water and god knows what else. Tan not withstanding came the day when his "buds" on the job informed him that,"come morning he was up to his neck in a croc pond (we have lots of those in Florida) to channel a line. The company was going to post a "shotgun" and well, best luck, have at it son."

Now, Ken and Carol had raised their family in Maine amid bear, back woods, poison ivy and mosquitoes which rival 727s and they developed among other survival skills a good aptitude for herbal remedies. Knowing this the son asked his father what precautions might he apply to ward off the croc menace. Ken immediately replied that he should place several cloves of fresh garlic in his pants pockets.

Satisfied and thus equiped the young man reported to work next morning and much to the glee of his co-workers announced that his father had devised a remedy to thwart any gator threat, "garlic." Well the day went, as expected, without incident and later that evening when son asked father why the garlic was a defense against croc attacks dad replied calmly, "what defense, the garlic just makes your leg taste better."

In 1924, Hachikō was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesamurō Ueno (上野英三郎), a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life, Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. Even after Ueno's death in May 1925, Hachikō returned every day to the station to wait for him, and did so for the next 10 years. In 1928, a new station master came to Shibuya Station who grew fond of the dog and allowed him free run of the facility. Hachikō still kept his schedule, but also was allowed to remain in the station throughout the day, sleeping in a storeroom set aside for him by the new station master.

Hachikō's devotion to his lost master moved those around him, who nicknamed him "faithful dog". Others at the station initially thought it was waiting for something else or roaming around but later realized it was waiting for its dead owner. So the vendors there used to give some bits of food and water. Others doubted it and said the dog might have come because of the food the vendors gave for it. But it appeared only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station. [2]

The breed is an ancient one, and its history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman war dog, local sheepdogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands.

This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th Century, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. But the build up to World War I saw a great demand for police dogs, and that led to a revival of interest in the Rottweiler.

From that time the breed has become popular with dog owners, and in 1935 was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.In 1936, Rottweilers were exhibited in Britain at Crufts. In 1966, a separate register was opened for the breed.

The first Rottweiler club in Germany, named DRK ("Deutscher Rottweiler-Klub" — German Rottweiler Club) was created the 13 January 1907, and followed by the creation of the SDRK ("Süddeutscher Rottweiler-Klub" — South German Rottweiler Club) on the 27 April 1907 and became the IRK (International Rottweiler Club). The DRK counted around 500 Rottweiler, the SDRK 3000 Rottweilers. The goals of the two clubs were different. The DRK wanted to produce working dogs and did not emphasize the morphology of the Rottweiler. The main stud dog of this club was Lord von der Teck. The IRK tried to produce a homogeneous morphology according to their standard. One of the main stud dogs of this club was Ralph von Neckar.

A popular misconception about the Rottweiler is that the breed was bred for dog fighting.

Vitamin D, the "sunshine" drug is thought to prevent many cancers and diseases. Scientists recommend 25 micrograms (1000 IUs) a day, which is 2.5 times greater than the current RDA. Suntan lotion blocks the skins absorption of viitamin D so one has to strike a balance to get some sun while avoiding skin cancer.

The article lists the following diseases that may be prevented by vitamin D:

Heart disease -Vitamin D works by lowering insulin resistance, which is one of the major factors leading to heart disease.
Lung disease - Lung tissue undergoes repair and "remodelling" in life and, since vitamin D influences the growth of a variety of cell types, it may play a role in this lung repair process.
Cancers (breast, colon, ovary, prostate) - Vitamin D is believed to play an important role in regulating the production of cells, a control that is missing in cancer. It has a protective effect against certain cancers by preventing overproduction of cells.
Diabetes - In type 1 diabetes the immune system destroys its own cells. Vitamin D is believed to act as an immunosuppressant. Researchers believe it may prevent an overly aggressive response from the immune system.
High blood pressure - Vitamin D is used by the parathyroid glands that sit on the thyroid gland in the neck. These secrete a hormone that regulates the body's calcium levels. Calcium, in turn, helps to regulate blood pressure, although the mechanism is not yet completely understood.
Schizophrenia - The chance of developing schizophrenia could be linked to how sunny it was in the months before birth. A lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which scientists believe could alter the growth of a child's brain in the womb.
Multiple sclerosis - Lack of vitamin D leads to limited production of 1.25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, the hormonal form of vitamin D3 which regulates the immune system, creating a risk for MS.
Rickets and osteoporosis - The vitamin strengthens bones, protecting against childhood rickets and osteoporosis in the elderly.

Jeff Green is a 32 year old American, in Arizona, whose wife passed away. Due to the great pain he suffered after her death, he did something totally out of character for a normal and sane person. The term "pit bull" is used to describe several breeds of dogs with similar physical characteristics, the American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. The pit bull is a medium-sized dog. They have a short coat which accentuates their muscular bodies looking like a doggy bodybuilder. Their skin can be extremely sensitive due to them shedding.The myth that pit bulls have a "locking jaw" mechanism and that the dog cannot let go once it has bitten is not true. For the most part, pit bulls have strong jaws for their size. A few studies have been conducted to this "locking jaw" mechanism. The result of the study was that their jaw structure and function is no different from that of any breed of dog.

Another myth is that "pit bulls don't feel pain". Pit bulls have the same nervous system of any other breed. "Gameness" is the trait defined as the desire to continue on and/or complete a task despite pain and discomfort. Pit bulls were breed to finish the task they were required to perform, tolerating or ignoring discomfort and pain. Therefore, the difficulty in deterring a pit bull from its task is not an inability to feel pain but rather a desirable trait in the trained working dog.

The "lifecar" stands for (Lightweight Fuel Efficient Car). It draws power from fuel cells that convert Hydrogen and Oxygen into electricity which is then fed into small electric motors. When designing the body and frame, weight reduction was of the highest priority. By reducing the overall weight, less power is needed to move and sustain speed. In its final form, the Lifecar is able to cruise almost effortlessly using a 24Kw system. Most competitors use at least 85Kw.

The lightweight design and highly efficient fuel cell system give the Lifecar a top speed of about 100mph. No official acceleration numbers have been released as of yet. The designers also incorporated regenerative braking and ultra-capacitors into the drive system. As you stop, energy in stored in the capacitators and then released during acceleration to help reduce fuel consumption even farther.
The vehicle cost about £1.9million ($3.77 million) to finish and brought together some of the best minds Europe has to offer. They hope to continue developing more efficient systems for future cars.

NASCAR teams rely on having the fastest car on the track, which takes long hours of reviewing diagnostics and performance data. So how do you gather data when your target is traveling over 180mph? With a really big treadmill, of course.
It may sound crazy, but it makes perfect sense. To get performance data from cars, you need a bunch of sensors. If you put sensors on the car, you add weight and in some cases, decrease aerodynamic properties. Not to mention imperfections in the road and interference from the surroundings. So whats a performance analyst to do? Enter NACARS's massive treadmill.The supersized piece of fitness equipment, owned by WindShear Inc, is currently housed in Concord, North Carolina. When in use, a two-story-high 5100 horsepower fan provides 180mph winds to simulate track conditions. Under the car is a 1 millimeter thick steel belt that can accelerate from 0 to 180mph in less than 60 seconds and come back to 0 in less than 10 seconds. The belt is 10.5ft. wide, 29.5ft. long and must be replaced every 5000 operating hours. For safety reasons, the vehicle is driverless and remains strapped in place by heavy duty tethers.
Beneath the steel belt are four sensors, one under each wheel. As the car accelerates or decelerates, they can mesure the individual and overall amount of down-force being applied to the car. This is critical when it comes to making one of the many high speed left hand turns. From the pictures, it looks like may also be able to mimic slightly uneven road surfaces.
And as with all technology, it comes a price. The owner, Gene Haas, charges a rental fee: A mere $4000 per hour.

After sealing the bottom of the vehicle, they needed a propulsion system for use in water. They removed the combustion engine and installed 3 electric motors. The larger motor drives the wheels for pavement use. The other 2 are used to spin 2 propellers in the rear of the vehicle. To help when submerged, 2 Seabob Jets set in front of the doors also provide thrust. The combination makes the Squba 100% emissions-free.
Rinspeed was careful not to remove the snappy performance while on land. Top speed has been reduced to an acceptable 75mph. When submerged the Elise can reach roughly 10mph, while on top of the water only 2mph can be achieved. The interior is made of salt-water resistant material and the seats are made of high friction materials so you don't float off.

The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel is the successor to the 2006 Exige 265E, which could operate on either gasoline or E85 Ethanol. (The "265" stands for the amount of horsepower produced and "E" stands for E85.)
The next generation of the Exige raises the bar by being gasoline and E85 compatible as well as Methanol, giving it the Tri-Fuel designation. The methanol produces 270hp and 185ft/lbs of torque from a supercharged 1.8L engine, which will get you from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds. Green is good.

Lotus is also working toward a Carbon-Neutral Synthetic Methanol. The process involves taking Carbon-Dioxide already in the atmosphere and causing a reaction with electrically produced Hydrogen, the result being Methanol. As an added bonus, liquid methanol can be transported and distributed in a very similar manner to gasoline, negating the need for a complete redesign at fueling stations.

A new type of vending machine has gotten the attention of federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents.
Vincent Mehdisadeh, the owner of the Los Angeles Herbal Nutrition Center, created a vending machine to serve his customers who have prescriptions for medial marijuana. The vending machines are now located at three spots throughout the city.

Mehdisadeh says everything is above board, however. The X-43 is an unmanned experimental hypersonic aircraft design with multiple planned scale variations meant to test different aspects of highly supersonic flight. It is part of NASA's Hyper-X program.
A winged booster rocket with the X-43 itself at the tip, called a "stack", is launched from a carrier plane. After the booster rocket (a modified first stage of the Pegasus rocket) brings the stack to the target speed and altitude, it is discarded, and the X-43 flies free using its own engine, a scramjet.

The first flight in June 2001 failed when the stack spun out of control about 11 seconds after the drop from the B-52 carrier plane. It was destroyed by the range safety officer, and it crashed into the Pacific Ocean. NASA attributed the crash to several inaccuracies in data modeling for this test, which led to an inadequate control system for the particular Pegasus used.

The X-43A's successful second flight made it the fastest free flying air-breathing aircraft in the world, though it was preceded by an Australian HyShot as the first operating scramjet engine flight. While still attached to its launching missile, the HyShot flew in descending powered flight in 2005.

The third flight of the X-43A set a new speed record of 12,144 km/h (7,546 mph), or Mach 9.8, on November 16, 2004. It was boosted by a modified Pegasus rocket which was launched from a Boeing B-52 at 13,157 meters (43,166 feet). After a free flight where the scramjet operated for about ten seconds, the craft made a planned crash into the Pacific ocean off the coast of southern California.

Widdifield, 33 (reconnaissance systems officer) (photo inset), flashed across the starting line (radar gates in New York) at approximately 80,000 feet and speed in excess of 2,000 miles per hour. Exactly 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds later, they had set a new world speed record from New York to London England. The average speed was 1,807 statute mph over the 3,461 statute mile course, slowing to refuel one time from a specially modified KC-135 refueling tanker.

Another historic speed record was set on the return trip to the United States. Capt Harold B. Adams, 31 (pilot), and Major William Machorek, 32 (reconnaissance systems operator), set a speed record from London to Los Angeles. A picture doesn't lie -- the one-hundred-and-five-story Ryugyong Hotel is hideous, dominating the Pyongyang skyline like some twisted North Korean version of Cinderella's castle. Not that you would be able to tell from the official government photos of the North Korean capital -- the hotel is such an eyesore, the Communist regime routinely covers it up, airbrushing it to make it look like it's open -- or Photoshopping or cropping it out of pictures completely.

Even by Communist standards, the 3,000-room hotel is hideously ugly, a series of three gray 328-foot long concrete wings shaped into a steep pyramid. With 75 degree sides that rise to an apex of 1,083 feet, the Hotel of Doom (also known as the Phantom Hotel and the Phantom Pyramid) isn't the just the worst designed building in the world -- it's the worst-built building, too. In 1987, Baikdoosan Architects and Engineers put its first shovel into the ground and more than twenty years later, after North Korea poured more than two percent of its gross domestic product to building this monster, the hotel remains unoccupied, unopened, and unfinished.

She is a latecomer to the information superhighway, but 75-year-old Sigbritt Lothberg is now cruising the Internet with a dizzying speed. Lothberg's 40 gigabits-per-second fiber-optic connection in Karlstad, Sweden, is believed to be the fastest residential uplink in the world, Karlstad city officials said.

In less than 2 seconds, Lothberg can download a full-length movie on her home computer -- many thousand times faster than most residential connections, said Hafsteinn Jonsson, head of the Karlstad city network unit.

Jonsson and Lothberg's son, Peter, worked together to install the connection.

The speed is reached using a new modulation technique that allows the sending of data between two routers placed up to 1,240 miles apart, without any transponders in between, Jonsson said. "We wanted to show that that there are no limitations to Internet speed," he said.

Peter Lothberg, who is a networking expert, said he wanted to demonstrate the new technology while providing a computer link for his mother.

"She's a brand-new Internet user," Lothberg said by phone from California, where he lives. "She didn't even have a computer before."

His mother isn't exactly making the most of her high-speed connection. She only uses it to read Web-based newspapers.

I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I'm too old to track down terrorists. (You can't be older than 42 to join the military.)

They've got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.

For starters:

Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. "My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry!" We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 a.m.

Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, "I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical son-of-a-bitch.

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we like soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training. I can hear the Drill Sgt. now, "Get down and give me ... er ... one."

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head. These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.

Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten cowards who attacked us on September 11. The last thing an enemy would want to see right now is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them.

If nothing else, put us on the border and we will have it secured the first night.

NORFOLK Naval Air Station Virginia -- One of the military's largest transports got stuck at the end of a runway atop the I-564 overpass for more than 16 hours. It was unable to turn around at the West end of Chambers Field at the Norfolk Naval Station. The incident forced the closing of the field to all but helicopter traffic and made for a dramatic sight for hundreds of motorists passing beneath it during morning rush hour.
"That thing's like a big building sitting there.'' said motorists. The nose of the aircraft actually stuck out and OVER the Interstate !
The aircraft's nose was so far over the end of the ramp, the crew was unable to see the runway where it was supposed to turn around so the pilot simply had to leave it at the end of the runway. The Air Force C-5 Galaxy, largest airplane in the free world, is almost aslong as a football field and as high as a six-story building.
Weighing 420 tons with a full load, it uses a system of 28 wheels to distribute its weight. The aircraft had to wait for a specially made tow bar trucked in from Dover, Del. When the tow bar arrived, it was used to hook the C-5 to a tractor that then turned the aircraft around. The p lane was not damaged.
The female co-pilot was overheard saying to the male pilot as they exited the plane...

This recent test flight shows the Automated Aerial Refuelling system (AAR), developed by the US Air Force Research Laboratory and Boeing Phantom Works, manoeuvring a Calspan Learjet equipped to fly autonomously and unmanned into one of seven refuelling positions behind a KC-135R tanker.
The AAR programme is developing and demonstrating flight control systems that will enable unmanned air vehicles to safely approach and manoeuvre around tanker aircraft so they can successfully perform boom and receptacle refuelling operations.

A C-130 was lumbering along when an F-16 flashed by.
The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, "watch this!" and promptly went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?
The C-130 pilot said, "That was impressive, but watch this!"
The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130 pilot came back on and said, "What did you think of that?" Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, "What the hell did you do?"

The eXasis is built on an aluminium frame with transparent light-weight plastic body panels and floor. It is powered by an extremely lightweight 150 bhp Weber engine driven by CO2-emission-reducing bioethanol. Because the car only weighs 750kg due to its lightweight plastic construction, one horsepower has to shift only 5kg - about the same as a very nippy Porsche.

VW's new prototype vehicle dubbed the VW Golf GTi '53 plus 1' is actually able to drive itself. It works using GPS technology which can track the vehicle to the nearest inch and even in its early state of development it has demonstrated speeds of 150mph in tests, avoided collisions, and even beaten VW test drivers around their own track.

The Terranaut has been designed to act as a mobile office for scientists or explorers to be taken to the most extreme locations in the world. On one side, the doors meet in the middle, and the rear one hinges from the back of the car. There is no B-pillar to help with getting equipment in and out of the back. Behind the front seats is a single rotating pew allowing the occupier 360° views through the roof, as well as access to equipment such as the computers supplied in the concept car.

Powered by a single lithium-ion battery, Nissan's Pivo is one of the first cars to have a spinning cockpit. This tiny car features electric sliding doors and several cameras mounted outside the cabin. Cameras located at either end of the car send a live feed to an 'Around View' dashboard screen that uses the data to generate a 360° image.

Belgian design company Creatix designed the Alfa Romeo Spix concept as an interpretation of what an Alfa Romeo sports car may look like in 50-100 years time. The EcoJet is a turbine-powered supercar that runs on bio-diesel and is capable of putting out 650 bhp. Materials used in its construction: everything that is light and good for cars - aluminum, magnesium, and carbon fibre parts. An eco-car in the true vein of fuel-guzzling American cars, this will probably do at most 2 miles to the galleon.

The Honda FCX is a hydrogen fuel cell car. Its powerplant uses three electric motors: one front-drive motor, and two smaller ones driving each of the rear wheels. Its new fuel cell stack can operate at temperatures as low as -30°C and the tanks can store up to 171 litres of hydrogen allowing for a range of up to 350 miles.
To support the hydrogen fuel-cell technology, Honda has also introduced the Home Energy Station which can convert natural gas to electricity, heat and hydrogen to refuel fuel-cell vehicles. This allows consumers to refuel vehicles at home until hydrogen becomes widespread. Alternatively, the hydrogen can be used in the HES's built-in hydrogen fuel cell, providing up to 5 kW of normal or backup electricity and hot water for the home. According to Honda, this solution is highly efficient and reduces running costs of electricity, gas and vehicle fuel by up to 50%.

Jaguar's new C-XF showcases a prototype technology called JaguarSense which allows certain functions to be activated with a sweep of a hand instead of the pushing of a button such as opening doors. An 'infotainment' screen, which is hidden in the centre console slides out when the driver moves his hand towards it and shows two images, allowing the driver to view sat-nav instructions while the passenger watches a DVD.

Ford, in association with Ballard, has developed an excellent modern crossover fuel cell vehicle. Called HySeries Drive, it is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. With a full tank of hydrogen and a full charge on the battery pack, the Airstream has a range of over 300 miles.
