1960 - Unbeaten jump
On 16 August, Joseph Kittinger threw himself out of an open gondola to make the world's highest ever parachute jump.
His leap from 102,800 ft (31,333 m) has never been bettered.
His peak speed during his fall was 614 miles an hour (988 km/h) - about nine-tenths the speed of sound.
